Our History

Although many CSI members lived in the Chicagoland area, up until March 1984, there were no CSI Churches in Chicago.  On March 11, 1984, a few CSI members got together to explore the possibility of organizing a congregation in Chicago.  These members who consisted of 7 families met at the residence of Mr. Varghese P. John, who was a resident of Chicago at the time, passed a resolution to form a congregation and to name it ‘The Church of South India Congregation of Greater Chicago.’

These members contacted the Rt.Rev. M.C.Mani, bishop of the Madhya Kerala Diocese, who gave his consent to the Rev.Dr. K.K Cherian and the Rev.Dr.Ninan Mathew, who were doing their higher studies at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, to conduct Worship Services.  The first Holy Communion Service was conducted on March 18, 1984 in the Lakeview Lutheran Church, 835 W. Addison, Chicago, IL.

Up until December 1990, the congregation held Services at the Lakeview Lutheran Church on Sunday evenings.  In December 1990, the congregation moved to the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany, 201 S. Ashland, Chicago and began conducting morning Services.  The congregation later moved the Worship Services to the Anderson Center in Oak Park in May 1992, to facilitate easier access to majority of its members.

On May 8, 1994 the General Body of the church unanimously passed a resolution to buy the Church at 5857 W. Giddings St, Chicago, IL.  The Church was purchased on July 15, 1994, and took possession on July 31, 1994.  On August 7, 1994 we started worship in our own Church.  On September 18, 1994 the name of the Congregation was changed to ‘The CSI Christ Church of Chicago.’

The Congregation formally became a Parish and dedicated the new Church on October 22, 1994 by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Sam Mathew, bishop of the Madhya Kerala Diocese.

We remember with gratitude, all the outstanding clergy who has led us.  The Rev. Dr. K.K Cherian, the Rev. Dr. Ninan Mathew, the Rt. Rev.Dr.George Isaac, the Rev. Dr. Abraham Stephen, the Rev. Dr. Retnadas Christudas, the Rev. Dr. K.T. Kurian, the Rev. T.C. Varughis, the Rev. M.P. Joseph, the Rev. Dr. Oommen George, the Rev. Dr. Ben Gladston, and the Rev. Dr. Mervin Boas served as pastors.  We also remember with gratitude, the Rev. C.S Philip, the Rev. Imbarasu, the Rev. Christopher Kurian and Mr. M.G Cherian who provided leadership on an interim, serving the Congregation.

Our congregation hosted the first national CSI Family Conference in the summer of 1987 and has been major presence in the national life of the CSI Congregations in North America. Our members have served in various positions of CSI leadership nationally. Our church has co-hosted the CSI Family Conferences 2007 and 2011.

Our Parish currently is led by the Rev. Benoy P. Jacob, has 39 families on its membership roll.  Praise & Worship and Holy Communion Services are conducted in English or Malayalam, on every Sunday at 10.00 A.M, and we welcome all to join in our Worship Services.  Missions and charitable giving are vital parts of the ministry of the Church from its inception. We hope to stay true our initial ‘statement of mission’ which is to ‘worship God in our tradition and cater to the spiritual and social needs of its members and other fellow Christians’.

We thank God for the marvelous ways he has blessed our Parish and his guidance through the years!
